Repair and cleaning

Careful cleaning and maintenance of lenses and mirrors to protect their coatings.

A telescope is a precision instrument. Its main optic, the primary lens or mirror, is made from high-quality glass such as Pyrex or quartz and has a smooth, carefully made surface.

That surface is exposed to harsh conditions: moisture, cold and heat. The glass goes through repeated cycles of expansion and contraction.

Lenses carry layers of optical coating that reduce glare and improve the image. Mirrors are coated with a very thin layer of aluminium (a fraction of a micron thick), with a protective coating over it to guard against the weather.

Over time, fungus can grow on these surfaces and the coatings deteriorate. Fungus can eat away the coatings and even the top layer of the glass. Cleaning protects the glass and its original coatings.

We clean lenses and mirrors professionally to protect their coatings and surfaces, and we do maintenance and repair work to keep your telescope performing at its best.
